Transmissions: A Map

FIRST ASSUMPTION:
There is one well.

THE QUERY:

It took along time for me to understand why I was simultaneously interested in both traditional "visionary" work as well as photography and video art that had a certain messiness/interference quality to it. They both were able to bring "spirit" into being equally, neither with intention exactly. The overlap I realized had to do with, and in fact was united linguistically, by the larger idea of "transmission." Then I discovered Mark Baum's work, and the equation grew to include the notion of code.

I think every artist who is accessing spirit (intentionally or not) is doing it through one of these three main ways.

THE ARTISTS I'VE WORKED WITH ARE BRIDGING SPIRIT AND ART IN VERY CONTEMPORARY WAYS THAT SPEAK TO OUR PARTICULAR ERA, WHERE THE SPIRITUAL AND THE ELECTRIC (TO USE MARSHALL MCLUHAN'S WORD)ARE OFTEN CLOSER THAN WE THINK. WHEREAS I THINK THAT USUALLY AN ARTIST RELIES ON ONE PRIMARY TYPE OF TRANSMISSION TO RECEIVE, SHE/HE WILL USUALLY USE A COMBINATION OF TECHNIQUES BY WHICH TO PARLAY THIS INTO MATERIAL FORM, AND INDEED THERE IS A LOT OF OVERLAP.
